Just like the PlayStation, Sony put a lot of effort into making it friendly for third-party designers. When it comes down to it, its game line-up is out of this world and the PS2 with its library of more than 1, original titles will probably be considered the strongest in the history of gaming. Almost all the genres have at least one or two hit tittles.

Although they were not really part of the plan when they launched the console, the inclusion of the Firewire ports and USB turned out great. Jak 2 seeks to expand on one of the most critically acclaimed action-adventure games of all time. It left big boots to fill when coming up with a concept that will live up to the sequel hype. If anybody can do it, though, it's the revered developers of Naughty Dog. Let's see if the highly-anticipated sequel manages to live up to its predecessor.

Jak and Daxter entered the fray at quite a convenient time. It was an age where 3D platformers were taking off and proving popular among the masses. Naughty Dog took advantage of the genre's prevalence by adding in their own franchise, offering their strong storytelling prowess into the mix.

The end result was our two loveable furry friends and was well met with gamers worldwide. Following up on such a fantastic first game is always tricky. However, somehow - Naughty Dog has managed to pull off another glorious entry. Jak 2 is one of those sequels that doesn't fix what's not broken but adds a little extra flair to get players excited about the world around them. The dark narrative of dystopian revenge complements the dreary Haven City, where much of the game is set.

The story progresses in an immersive manner with robust character development for Jak and Daxter. All three games revolve around Jak and Daxter exploring a hub world, which connects to various stages to explore.

While the later two games introduce an abundance of side-missions and open-world content, the first game is more basic, focused on collecting powerful Precursor orbs as players complete tricky jumps and fight enemies.

With each sequel, the maps become bigger and more detailed, and a larger emphasis is placed on action and combat. Both of the sequels expand upon exploration by introducing vehicles and maps with more points of interest, encouraging players to take their time and talk to every character. The second and third games include a wider variety of weapons, including close-range shotguns, miniguns, and revolvers.

The introduction of the Dark Jak form also emphasizes melee combat, giving the player increased attack and agility for a limited time. The third game even includes a Light Jak transformation, which enhances defense and blocking. As a trilogy, the Jak and Daxter games provide a consistently evolving gameplay design that grows more addictive and plentiful with content, resulting in over 60 hours of enticing platforming fun.

While it is not an easy task, it is one that most gamers will accomplish and have a good time doing so. Before you groan, understand that this game is much more than a Crash offshoot. While it does have a very familiar and comfortable feel to it, it also has some unique features and ideas that give the game a personality all of its own.

You play the game as Jak. He has a number of moves that are easily executed with only a small amount of practice. Jak can jump, kick spin okay, this was a Crash rip-off , punch, crouch, roll, dive attack, aerial attack and pull of a couple of different uppercut punches.

Jak also has a first person camera that you are able to access by holding down a button. This will help you spot objectives, items in the distance or just plain help you get your bearings. He is the comic relief that ended up losing humor after a short amount of time. Hey, I am all for the wise-cracking sidekick but if it is overused, we all know that the sidekick can start to grate on the nerves. Every time you die, good old Daxter has some witty comment to make. Okay, maybe I am being a little harsh and I bet the younger kids will love him but about 20 minutes into the game I was asking myself the question: Why the hell am I wasting my time trying to help this annoying thing out?

Anyway, moving on, the basics of the game have Jak seeking out Power Cells. These Power Cells have a number of uses but they are primarily used to open new areas of the game. The Power Cells can be obtained a number of ways. Sometimes they are simply floating around and you just need to walk up to them and pick them up; other times you will kill an enemy and they will drop one.

The player controls Jak, who has access to abilities such as double jumping, a rapid spinning kick, and glide punching. Injuries are accounted for by way of a life meter, which decreases whenever Jak is hit by enemies, falls long distances, or makes contact with hazardous surfaces. The Precursor Legacy offers several collectibles for the player to gather. The main objects are power cells, which are used to energize machinery to reach new levels.

Power cells can be earned in many ways, such as fighting enemies, performing tasks for other characters, completing platforming challenges, and paying for them via Precursor orbs. Precursor orbs are egg-shaped collectables found scattered throughout the world, some in plain sight, and some hidden.

Another collectible, scout flies, appear on every level. Collecting all seven scout flies in a level rewards the player with a power cell. A large part of the gameplay revolves around eco, a type of colored energy that comes in six different forms. Green eco, the most common of the six types of eco, restores health. Dark eco also exists in the game, but as an obstacle that damages Jak, rather than an item that is collected.

Light eco is also used exclusively in the game's final boss battle. The game contains three bosses whose defeat earns the player power cells or allows the player some method of progressing further in the game. However, not all bosses are mandatory. The first boss, the dark eco plant, is only defeated in order to gain a power cell and to remove hazardous spiked tentacles from the jungle area.
